WINstream New Low Cost Terminal Adapter for Internet and Remote LAN Access

WINstream the new low cost Standalone Terminal Adaptor has been designed to meet the market demands for reliable Voice and Data ISDN connectivity. Providing high speed and secure data transfer for the high growth Remote LAN and Internet Access markets at a price not available on many market leading products. It can support not only data but also up to 8 telephones via the two analogue ports. The WINstream unit is being released world-wide in both Data only and Voice and Data configurations.

The Low Cost Product for a Growth Market

Communications is at the hub of the cultural change that makes the world simply and quickly accessible, and allows the home to become the workplace. ISDN has a major part to play in this revolution, providing a reliable high speed voice and data communication path. WINstream provides the price and performance to meet these needs:

What is WINstream ?

WINstream is presented in the new post card size grey and red corporate housing. It is shipped with a Quick Start Guide, Manual (on CD), Internet Software (on CD), Windows Configurator, ISDN and DTE line cable and PSU. The UK configuration will include Telephone adapter cables.

The Quick Start Guide is in German, French, Italian, Spanish and English whereas the main manual is in English.

The positioning of WINstream as an Internet and Remote LAN access device is reflected in the feature set that includes :

High Speed Data Port The V.24 port can operate asyncronously at speeds upto 230kbit/s, enabling in conjunction with Multi link PPP utilisation of the full ISDN bandwidth.
Two Voice Ports supporting 8 telephones. They can support standard telephones, fax machines and provide local tones. Thus to the user and the automatic fax machines they sound like the standard telephone interface.

Each of the voice ports has REN of 4, enabling up to 4 telephones to be connected to each port, and a total of 8 devices per WINstream. Note most voice ports on Terminal Adapters in the market will only support up to 2 devices.

High speed file transfer with Multilink PPP Even with a single terminal port WINstream can provide 128kbit/s throughput down the ISDN, by utilising both B channels. WINstream will automatically initiate the calls and utilise the Multilink PPP protocol to control the data flow.
Access Protection with CHAP and PAP Authentication To authenticate the PC which WINstream user can implement either PAP or CHAP. CHAP the more sophisticated of the two systems uses a combination of the user ID and password sent in an encrypted form to complete the verification. This security mechanism is available on both lines of a Multilink PPP connection, providing total access security.
Optimal use of ISDN B channels with Bandwidth Allocation Control Protocol If WINstream is utilising both B channels for a single call with Multilink PPP, without BACP, no other calls (voice or data) can be received. BACP however, enables an incoming call (voice or data) to be answered after dropping a B channel. This bandwidth reduction is achieved in a controlled manner so that when the second call is completed, the original call can automatically step back up to 128kbit/s.

This feature has been tested with Ascend and is also expected to be fully supported by Shiva.

Connection to V.120 and X.75 Bulletin Boards To connect into bulletin boards the X.75 and V.120 adaption protocols are supported by WINstream. Rate adaption enables asynchronous data to be sent at the ISDN line speed. As a result of this adaption an effective speed of 80kbit/s can achieved down a single B channel.
Voice Port maintained when Mains Power Supply fails. If required, an external battery power source can be installed which provides resilience against mains power failure. Enabling the unit to be on standby for 24hrs and telephone calls to be continued for a period of 2 hours.
Down line upgrade with Flash Memory Allows for a high speed upgrade for new features over the Internet without the need to open or return the unit.
Simple configuration with WINstream Configurator Software This easy to use Windows configuration program can store up to four profiles to make it easier to set up the WINstream for different connection types. This program will operate under Windows 3.x, 95 and NT.
Multilingual Internet access Internet with an Accent Software Internet with an Accent is the first truly multilingual product suite that allows you to browse, publish, and e-mail friends or business associates in over 30 languages.
Simple Installation with Plug and Play feature. Connect WINstream to the PC and it will be automatically detected. If the WINstream unit is recognised by the Windows OS then the set up will be automatic; if not, the user will be stepped through the installation process.

DAP6000 Comparison

In many circumstances the WINstream is a direct replacement to the DAP 6000 product range. It enhances many of the DAP6000 features providing greater terminal and line speeds but at a lower price to the customer. However if, management, V42bis compression or synchronous communication are required, the DAP6000 is the unit of choice.
